Change to Academic Program 19 to 23 April

Dear Science Faculty Students and Staff,

Following the fire and subsequent evacuation from UCT’s campus, I am writing to clarify how the Science Faculty academic program will proceed. In line with the VC Desk (20th April 2021), the following changes are being implemented.

For undergraduate courses:

The academic program is suspended for the remainder of this week. The academic program will resume on Monday 26th April. This means:

  • There is no expectation of academic activity (online or face-to-face) until Monday 26th April. In cases where the week's material has already been released online, time to work through this will be integrated into the timetable from 26th April.
  • All assessments and deliverables scheduled for this week will be rescheduled.
  • The mid-semester vacation will take place as scheduled from Monday 3rd to Friday 7th May.
  • We will not be adding an additional week of teaching time to make up for the time lost to the fire. Rather, courses will appropriately adapt the remaining assessments and content to fit the reduced number of teaching days. The HoDs will manage this arrangement.

For post-graduate courses:

The resumption of the academic program will be determined on a course-by-course basis, in consultation with the relevant staff and students.

  • In some cases this may be possible as soon as Wednesday 21st April, online.
  • All courses to recommence by 26th April.
  • Face-to-face activities will not be possible this week.

The Faculty wishes you strength and resilience as we recover from this tragedy and resume the academic project.

Yours sincerely,

Professor Maano Ramutsindela

Dean, Faculty of Science
