Registration

The Faculty of Science welcomes all postgraduate students in 2021, and we wish you well in your postgraduate studies and research.

Instructions on how to register for the different postgraduate degrees offered by the Faculty of Science have changed for 2021.

Note that all postgraduate registration in 2021 will be online, by means of a few different methods, depending on the degree. All postgraduate students will receive a notification in 2021 as to when they can start the registration process, together with further information on the process to follow.

Registration for 2021 will start from 4 January 2021 for returning PhD and full research Master’s students. The process will start with a notification to login to PeopleSoft to start working on the online “Progress & Planned Activities” (PPA). The process of checking and approval by the supervisors and Head of Department will all take place online. The process will be finalised with the completion of an online registration task (instructions to be provided).

New PhD and full research Master’s students will start the registration process in 2021 on receipt of a notification to login to PeopleSoft and complete the online “Memorandum of Understanding” (MoU). The process will be finalised with the completion of an online registration task (instructions to be provided).    

New Master’s (coursework & minor dissertation) students will register online using the Peoplesoft system, after receiving a notification and details of the process in late February 2021.

Honours students will register online using the Peoplesoft system, after receiving a notification and details of the process in late February 2021.  

The deadline for postgraduate registration is 12th March 2021. 

Note that the 2020 information below is not relevant for 2021.  

  • Honours

     

    Registration of Honours students takes place at the beginning of the academic year.  Registration is on-line on PeopleSoft (with the exception of Computer Science) and must be completed by 12th March 2021. Detailed instructions and documents required for the registration process are given here:

  • Coursework Masters

    Coursework Masters

    Registration of new and returning Coursework Masters students takes place at the beginning of the academic year. 
    Registration forms must be submitted to the Faculty Office by 12 March 2021.

    Registrations after this deadline will incur a R2000 late registration penalty.

  • Research Masters

    Research Masters (by dissertation only)

    New Students

    New Research Master's students (i.e.dissertation only ) can register at any time of the year. Students must complete the ACA47a Memorandum of Understanding  (MoU) in consultation with their supervisor(s), and upload the completed MoU and a 1-2 page research proposal to PeopleSoft. The supervisor is required to approve the submitted documents on Peoplesoft after which the Head of Department (HoD) and Dean are also required to approve the documents. Once the documents have been approved, students will be notified to register online on PeopleSoft. Note that the notification may take up to 24 hours to be generated after the documents have been approved. 

    Returning Students

    Returning Research Masters students must complete the ACA48 Progress and Planned Activity (PPA) form, in consultation with their supervisor.  Students must upload the completed PPA form to PeopleSoft for approval by the supervisor, HoD and Dean. Students will be notified to register on-line on PeopleSoft once their PPA has been approved.  Note that the notification may take up to 24 hours to be generated after the documents have been approved.  Returning students must register on-line on PeopleSoft by the 7th February 2020.  Registrations after this deadline will incur a R2000 late registration penalty.

  • PhD

    New Students

    Returning Students

International Students (excluding Postdoctoral Fellows)
Clearance (i.e. visa, medical aid and fee checks) for international students will be completed remotely by the International Academic Programmes Office (IAPO). For further information, please refer to http://www.iapo.uct.ac.za/iapo/intstud or email: iapo@uct.ac.za. You must produce a valid study permit, medical insurance certificate and proof of payment of fees in order to obtain clearance before registering at the Faculty Office.

Late Registration   
A late registration penalty of R2000 will apply.

Students with Outstanding Fees
You will NOT be allowed to register until your fee account has been settled. Please make the required payment at the Fees Office prior to registering at the Faculty.
