The role of the Computer Science Department is to produce graduates with knowledge and skills relevant to both the International and the South African Information Technology community; to carry out innovative research; to produce service courses and provide research assistance in the fields of science and engineering and to provide services to Industry through technology transfer and applied research.
The computer Science Department is as leading research institution in South Africa and the academic staff are nationally and internationally active and recognised.
Innovative research takes place in the department and is conducted largely within three research groupings/laboratories: Advanced Information Management, Collaborative Visual Computing, and Data Network Architecture.
A degree in computer science provides graduates with opportunities in stimulating and well-paid careers all over the world, as the department aims to produce graduates with knowledge and skills relevant to both the international and the South African technology communities. The department plays an important role in the industry and provides services to industries through technology transfer and applied research.
